Week 23 Update

Premier Division

The standout individual performance of the week undoubtedly came from Clock Tower’s David Birley, who was in irresistible form during his side’s 4–1 away win at Alfreton. Birley controlled both of his frames from start to finish. He opened with a composed 38 break against Jack Morton before shifting through the gears in his second match against Gary England, sealing the performance with decisive contributions of 30 and a superb 92. While it narrowly falls short of the season’s highest Premier Division break — Steve Donner’s 95 for Welcome — it was nevertheless a tremendous display of scoring power.

Welcome, meanwhile, refused to give Clock Tower any breathing space in the race for top spot. After last week’s setback, they responded exactly as champions do, delivering a commanding 5–0 victory — their third whitewash of the campaign.

Ash Walker maintained his 100% record with a classy 47 break and remains hot on Birley’s heels in the players’ rankings. Further wins from Tony Morgan, Dave Bolton, Dave Wilkinson and Adam Clift ensured the Sutton side stay firmly in control at the summit.

Over at YM, Brotherhood ‘A’ showed they are not ready to concede the fight for a top-two finish. Bouncing back from last week’s 5–0 defeat, they secured a convincing 4–1 win over Alfreton ‘H’. Jonathan Hall rounded off the evening in style, producing a dominant performance that included a well-crafted 40 break.

Division One

You could be forgiven for thinking the clash between YM ‘C’ and Clowne ‘A’ was a foregone conclusion given their contrasting league positions. But Clowne ‘A’, battling hard for Division One survival, had other ideas.

Captain Scott Anson, fresh from his Harry Anderson success, inspired his side to arguably their best win of the season. Victories for Anson, Brian Croft, Jay Garbett, Richard Hill and stand-in Shaz Hussain secured a superb team performance and ensured the battle at the foot of the table is very much alive.

With Alfreton ‘D’ also claiming a valuable 3–2 away win, the gap at the top has now been cut to just three points — game on!

In the mid-table encounter, YM ‘B’ edged out Alfreton ‘B’. Despite Rocco Amalou producing an excellent performance to defeat the in-form Andrew Frisby, YM responded strongly, with Lee Buckland and Martin Conway both showing impressive scoring touch to steer their side to victory.

Division Two

The top two went head-to-head this week and, as expected, there was very little to separate them. In a tight, hard-fought contest, the leaders edged the victory to stretch their advantage by a further point at the summit.

Lennons ‘C’ firmly re-entered the title conversation with an emphatic win over Hasland ‘D’, while Hasland ‘C’ continue to cling onto the leading pack. It remains one of the most competitive divisions, with plenty still to play for as the season progresses.

Despite tasting defeat this week, Deano Hancock retains his position at the top of the players’ standings. However, with teammate Brian James securing another win, the pressure is mounting. The battle for the number one spot is heating up — and the individual rankings are proving to be just as competitive as the league table itself.

Division Three

With leaders YM ‘F’ enjoying a week off, the chasing pack were handed an opportunity to close the gap — and they took it. Both Alfreton sides secured hard-fought 3–2 victories, ensuring the title race remains very much alive. The gap at the summit now stands at just three points.

New Whitt halted their recent run of defeats with a narrow win over Brotherhood ‘D’. The standout moment of the match came from Simon Wall, who compiled a classy 48 break in a fine scoring display.

Elsewhere, Daryl Turner’s emphatic victory over Alfreton’s Bill Jephson marked his eighth consecutive win, lifting the Hasland player into second place in the individual standings. He now sits just 70 points behind leader Paul Sainsbury, keeping the pressure firmly on at the top.

Division Four

Lennons ‘G’ have opened up the most significant lead we’ve seen in this division for several weeks following their impressive 4–1 away victory over YM Brotherhood ‘G’. With seven fixtures remaining, the question now is whether they can turn that advantage into a title-winning run.

Adding to an already strong evening, Ian North compiled the highest break of the season so far — a solid 40 against Darren Perry — underlining the quality on show. Well played, Ian.

Elsewhere at the YM, team ‘E’ kept themselves firmly in the title conversation with a comfortable win over Newbold WMC. Meanwhile, the battle at the bottom remains finely poised. Despite a 3–2 defeat at Lennons ‘J’, Alfreton ‘E’ managed to pick up two valuable frames to keep things tight.

Andy Oughton secured his first win in seven weeks, while John Farrell made it back-to-back victories, giving their side renewed belief as the run-in approaches.

Competitions

The standout performer of the week was undoubtedly The Clock Tower’s David Birley. His scoring list speaks for itself. Across his league and competition matches, Birley compiled nine 30+ breaks in just ten frames, including superb efforts of 86, 87 and a magnificent 92 — the highest of the week. An outstanding standard, Dave!

Also in fine scoring form was Welcome’s Guy Dennis. In his bid to retain the John Smith title, he produced a classy 64 break in a tightly contested quarter-final victory over Andrew Frisby.

Clowne’s Scott Anson also showed great composure under pressure to edge past Alfreton’s Rich England. Despite England firing in breaks of 36 and a 52 in the deciding frame, Anson held his nerve to close out the match and book his place in the last eight of the Harry Anderson Memorial. Well played, Scott.

Rounding off the Geoff Hardy Memorial quarter-finals, YM’s Michael Elliott secured his semi-final spot with a commanding 3–0 win over Daz Hemingray. Remarkably, Elliott has yet to drop a frame in this season’s competition — seriously impressive form, Michael!
