Week 24 Update

On fire Clifty fires in his first league Century

Adam Clift, Welcome Institute ‘A’

This week saw Welcome Institute’s Adam Clift become the latest player to join the league’s prestigious Century Club, sponsored by Haneys Driveways & Patios.

Adam becomes just the 40th player in the league’s 98-year history to reach the milestone, and his superb 103 break against YM’s John Roseman in the latest round of the Handicap competition marked the 4th of the season and 114th century compiled across all league and competition matches since 1970.

His scoring form has been exceptional throughout the season, and there had been clear signs that a big break was on the horizon. To finally convert that promise into a century is a fantastic achievement.

Congratulations, Adam — thoroughly deserved!

Premier Division

The much-anticipated clash at the summit went the way of the Welcome Institute, who once again demonstrated why they’ve set the pace for most of the season. The victory preserves their five-point cushion at the top, and with just five matches remaining, that advantage could prove decisive.

David Birley was in ruthless form, crafting two clinical breaks to leave Morgan without a point in reply. Ash Walker maintained his flawless record, holding his nerve to clear the colours against Dan Tramontano and snatch the frame by a single point. Guy Dennis and Steve Donner also continued their strong scoring form, with Donner producing a string of superb pots on the green, brown and blue to edge past Dave Pagett.

Meetings between the Clock Tower and the Welcome rarely disappoint, and this latest instalment was another high-quality encounter befitting the league’s top two sides.

Division One

The accolade for highest break of the week across all divisions goes to Clowne’s Richard Hill, whose excellent 57 against Alfreton’s Adam West is now the second-highest in the division this season. A superb effort, Richard. Unfortunately for Clowne, the break wasn’t enough to secure the win, as Alfreton claimed their fifth victory of the campaign to keep a slender edge in the battle at the foot of the table.

In the Alfreton derby, team ‘D’ were unable to take advantage of last week’s surprise slip from the leaders. Having seen the top side go down 5–0 to Clowne, ‘D’ had an opportunity to apply pressure but instead found themselves on the receiving end of a whitewash by team ‘B’.

YM ‘C’, meanwhile, returned to winning ways and re-established a healthy cushion at the summit as the season edges towards its conclusion.

Division Two

The battle at the top is intensifying as we head into the final stretch of fixtures. The leading trio all secured victories this week, but it was Hasland ‘C’ who made the biggest statement, claiming maximum points. Wins from Ben Green, Adam Moss, Dean Jepson, David Vaulks and Dean Sporton — who added a crisp 42 break — have firmly thrust them into genuine title contention.

Matching that scoring effort was Clowne’s Paul Scott, who compiled an equally impressive 42 during their away win at Hasland ‘D’. Quality scoring at a crucial stage of the season — great shooting all round.

Division Three

There were celebrations at New Whittington this week as Alfreton ‘F’s Johnnie Warner Junior finally got off the mark for the season. His captain’s faith was rewarded, as Johnnie’s hard-earned frame ultimately proved decisive in a narrow 3–2 victory for Alfreton. Congratulations Johnnie — hopefully the first of many.

Hasland ‘B’s Daryl Turner continues his steady climb up the individual rankings. His win over Newbold’s Ricky Strong — a ninth in succession — sees him move to the top of the players standings. A superb run of form, Daryl.

At the top of the table, leaders YM ‘F’ show no signs of easing up. A second whitewash of the campaign and their third victory over clubmates ‘D’ has stretched their advantage to five points heading into the final quarter of the season. The question now is whether Alfreton can close the gap in time.

Division Four

Alfreton ‘E’ brought a difficult run to an end this week, stopping the rot after 16 consecutive defeats with a hard-fought win over YM ‘E’. The celebrations at the final handshake said it all — a thoroughly deserved moment for the team and hopefully a turning point as the season draws on.

Over in the Lennons derby, leaders ‘G’ were edged out by ‘J’ in a tight encounter. With YM ‘H’ collecting four frames this week, the gap at the summit has been trimmed to just three points, tightening the title race once again.

In the individual standings, Ash Radford’s absence opened the door for Ash Conners, who seized the opportunity with a win over YM ‘G’ to move into top spot. With both the team and individual races heating up, there’s still plenty to be decided.

Competitions

As the competitions edges towards the business end, the standard of play shows no sign of dipping. The standout moment this week was Adam Clift’s superb century break in his Handicap clash with John Roseman. Clift didn’t stop there, adding further breaks of 37 and 46 in the same match, along with 45 and 53 just days earlier in the Team of Three competition. A remarkable spell of scoring – you certainly had the cue flowing, Adam.

There was also high-quality scoring in the Handicap meeting between David Birley and Jason Rimington. An impressive eight breaks over 30 were compiled across the five-frame thriller, eventually edged by the 2017 champion. A cracking contest and a great advert for the competition – well played both, and congratulations Dave.

Jim Harrison’s fine form continues as he marched into the quarter-finals of the Harry Anderson Memorial. His 53 break against YM’s Gav Cann proved the highlight of a convincing display. Harrison also secured his place in the Premier Competition semi-finals, overcoming teammate Guy Dennis, who struck a classy 50 but couldn’t quite halt James’ momentum this season.

Joining Harrison in the Premier semi-finals is Alfreton’s Ian Rose, who ended Lewis Longden’s run with a solid 3–0 victory. Credit to Lewis for reaching the last eight in our blue-ribbon event.

Longden quickly bounced back in the Scotch Doubles alongside Jack Johnson. After falling 2–0 behind to Alfreton’s Adam White and Dylan Wright, the Lennons duo showed real resilience, taking the next three frames to seal their quarter-final berth. Excellent fightback, lads.

Finally, don’t forget to check the details below for the upcoming Pairs Final. It promises to be a great evening, and I’m sure all four finalists would appreciate your support.
