Week 2 update

Premier Division Update

The Welcome Institute ‘A’ have wasted no time reminding everyone why they’re the reigning champions. Kicking off the new season in ruthless fashion, they stormed to a clean sweep away at Alfreton ‘A’, pocketing all five points. Tony Morgan and Jim Harrison were in fine scoring form, but it was Steve Donner who stole the spotlight. In the very first frame, Donner unleashed a dazzling 95 break, narrowly missing the pink for what would’ve been a glorious century. So close, Steve — but what a statement to start the season!

Meanwhile, over at the Clock Tower, Alfreton ‘H’ fared no better. The Barrow Hill side celebrated their brand-new home in style, dishing out another 5–0 whitewash. The opener between Martin Finnigan and Ant McMahon turned into a marathon, stretching to nearly an hour and twenty minutes, but once that was out of the way, the pace picked up dramatically. Shaun Wilkes lit up the evening with a slick 52 break, sealing his win and, in the process, grabbing an early lead in the player standings.

Division One Update

Back in Division One, last season’s Division Two champions Alfreton ‘B’ made a strong start with a convincing victory over New Whittington ‘B’, who have yet to rediscover the form that earned them second place last year. The father-and-son pairing of Rocco and Rich Amalou set the tone for Alfreton, with further wins added by Adam Devereux and Scott Twells. A whitewash was narrowly avoided when Jamie Bosworth secured a consolation frame for New Whittington, highlighted by a tidy break of 31.

Alfreton ‘D’ bounced back from last week’s disappointment to collect two valuable points. The highlight of the evening was the return of veteran Pat Dillon, who marked his comeback in style with a dramatic fourth-frame victory over Adam White. Showcasing some superb long potting, Dillon helped seal back-to-back wins for Clowne ‘A’—a warm welcome back to league action for Pat.

Meanwhile, Brotherhood ‘B’ edged out Alfreton ‘G’ in a closely contested match. Trailing 2–0 early on, Brotherhood rallied thanks to a fine 45 break from Andrew Frisby and two crucial frame wins from Matt Scraton, earning the Clay Cross side their first victory of the season.

Division Two update

Clowne ‘B’ have shown they’re more than ready for the challenge in their new division, picking up their first win of the season with a commanding 4–1 victory at home against Lennons ‘F’. Victories from Ricky Wylde, Simon Furniss, Robbie Harris, and our new vice-chairman, Chris Field, sealed the result. Chris has already been warmly praised by several players and teams for making the effort to visit different clubs on match nights – so if you see him at your fixture, be sure to say hello. Great work, Chris!

Meanwhile, over at Grassmoor, Hasland Club C may have fallen to the hosts, but Dean Sporton made his mark with an impressive 44 break to open the match – setting the benchmark for the rest of the division.

Division Three update

The highlight of Division Three this week came from YM Brotherhood’s Keith Chaplin, who produced a brilliant 58 break in his opening frame against Newbold’s Steve Kennie. Having claimed the Division Four Masters title last season, Chaplin’s effort could well be an early contender for the Division Three high break award this year.

Alfreton ‘F’ have taken an early lead at the top of the table, backing up their opening win with a commanding 4–1 victory in the all-Alfreton derby against the ‘C’ team.

Elsewhere, Hasland ‘B’ got their season up and running by securing their first win against New Whittington ‘A’.

Division Four update

Lennons ‘J’ remain at the top of the standings this week, despite a narrow 3-2 defeat to Brotherhood ‘G’, who began their campaign with a well-earned victory.

In the all-Brotherhood encounter, new side YM ‘H’ overcame the experienced ‘E’ team. With the match finely balanced at 2-2, captain Dan Thorpe secured the decisive frame to guide his team to their first win.

With every fixture this week finishing 3-2, early indications suggest this division will be highly competitive throughout the season.

Competition Results

Ron Hill, Alfreton ‘C’

Hill Claims First League Victory

Alfreton’s Ron Hill marked his arrival in the league with his first competition win this week. After establishing a 2–0 advantage, Hill was forced to withstand a spirited fightback from Newbold’s David Clarke, eventually closing out a tense contest 3–2 to advance to the second round of the Geoff Hardy Memorial.

Also in the Geoff Hardy, Barbara Shillaker from Lennons ‘J’ also books a place into the next round after a hard fought battle with Brotherhood’s Robert Cook. Well done Barbara!

Birley Begins Title Defence in Style

Defending Premier competition champion David Birley made a commanding start to his campaign, sweeping aside Brotherhood’s Lee Hage with a series of clinical breaks. Birley’s performance underlined his intent to retain the title.

Greenfield Produces Early Upset

The Handicap competition delivered an early shock as Division 3’s Callum Greenfield overcame Premier player James Harrison in the opening round. Despite Harrison compiling a respectable 51 break, Greenfield edged the opening frame on a re-spotted black and carried the momentum through to victory. Harrison responded positively the following day, progressing to round two of the Premier competition with a victory over former champion Jason Rimington, aided by his third 40+ break of the week.

Neale and Edwards Secure Ding Academy Places

Alfreton’s David Neale booked his place in the last 32 of the Romley, overcoming preliminary round opponents Tommy Maune and Dylan Wright to secure his spot at the Ding Academy in January. He will be joined by Alfreton ‘D’ club mate Matt Edwards, who impressed in his win over veteran Kieron Stevenson.
