Week 18 Update

Premier Division

A superb all-round team performance from Alfreton ‘A’ earned an impressive victory over the Welcome Institute this week. Standout displays from Jack Morton, Ian Rose and Gary England secured Alfreton’s fourth win of the season. Dave Bolton and the unbeaten Ash Walker picked up two points for the Welcome, who have suffered just two defeats so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, at the Clocktower, the Barrow Hill team edged past Alfreton ‘H’ in a tight 3–2 contest to temporarily move to the top of the division. Although they gained a point on their nearest rivals, the Welcome still retain a crucial game in hand.

Division One

An impressive opening frame from Rocco Amalou against New Whitt’s Jamie Bosworth saw the young Alfreton player compile the highest break of the week, a very respectable 43. A fine display of potting from Rocco, but despite the strong start, Alfreton ‘B’ left New Whitt with just two points.

Clowne’s struggles at the foot of the division continued as they suffered their eighth consecutive defeat, this time against high-flying Alfreton ‘D’. Clowne narrowly avoided their first whitewash of the season thanks to a late consolation frame from Richard Hill.

Despite not featuring this week, Lee Hage climbed to the top of the player rankings following a rare defeat for YM ‘B’’s Andrew Frisby, who had held the number one spot for several weeks. A superb performance from Alfreton ‘G’’s David Neale against the usually reliable Frisby opened the door for Hage to move into top position.

Division Two

Clowne ‘B’’s promotion charge continued this week with another commanding performance, this time against Lennons ‘F’. The victory marked their seventh consecutive win as they push ever closer to Division One snooker.

Both Hasland Club teams are beginning to build momentum, each recording victories this week, and a potential title challenge will surely be in their thoughts.

At the opposite end of the table, the battle for Division Two survival is intensifying, with Doe Lea and Lennons ‘F’ locked level on points.

Division Three

It was very much status quo at the top of the table, with the leading two teams both recording victories by identical scorelines.

Alfreton ‘F’ claimed local bragging rights in the all-Alfreton derby, producing a convincing win over Team ‘C’. The only consolation for Team ‘C’ came courtesy of the newly crowned Under-17s champion, Kai Hopkins, who edged past Shane Miles in a tightly contested frame.

League leaders YM ‘F’ extended their impressive run to 12 consecutive wins, tightening their grip at the top of the division.

The contest between Hasland ‘B’ and New Whitt ‘A’ proved far closer. In a 3–2 encounter, just eight points separated the sides on the night, with the victory giving Hasland a timely boost to their survival hopes.

Division Four

Lennons ‘G’ surged to the top of the division this week following an impressive whitewash victory over Newbold WMC. Frame wins from Kev Caddick, Ash Radford, Denis Rodgers, Ian North and captain Sean Lennon sealed the comprehensive 5–0 result. However, as has been the case for much of the season, the division remains finely balanced, with just five points separating the top five teams.

In the player standings, Ash Radford has opened up a small cushion at the summit — can he maintain his lead for the remainder of the season?

Competitions

There were several standout performances across this week’s competitions, beginning in the Premier where Lewis Longden booked his place in the quarter-finals with an impressive victory over former champion Rich England. With Longden sitting two divisions and 102 places below England in the rankings, this was a remarkable result — a superb achievement from Lewis.

England quickly put the disappointment behind him in the Handicap competition, producing a dominant display against Gareth Clarke. A series of strong breaks, including a superb 70 — the highest of the week — served as a timely reminder of the quality the Premier player possesses. Excellent stuff from Rich.

Guy Dennis was once again in fine scoring form in the Harry Anderson, compiling several impressive breaks against Kennedy Wright. Despite Dennis’ heavy scoring, Wright showed great resilience, pushing the match all the way to a deciding frame, which Dennis eventually claimed.

In the John Smith Memorial, the handicap system earned praise as the opening three frames between Martin Burrell and Guy Dennis were all settled on the black. Dennis ultimately edged through as a 3–1 winner to record another hard-fought victory.

There were also standout performances from two Deans in the Geoff Hardy Memorial Trophy. Grassmoor’s Dean Hancock, continuing his recent run of strong form, produced another fine scoring display in a 3–0 win over Callum Greenfield, highlighted by an excellent 46 break — great shooting, Deano.

Elsewhere, Alfreton’s Dean Bullock produced an eye-catching result of his own, dispatching Mike Boden — ranked 80 places above him and in fine league form — with a comprehensive 3–0 victory to secure his place in the quarter-finals-Well done Dean!

Finally, in the Team of Three, it looked like an early night at New Whitt as Dan Lock, Mark Lee and Andy Marples stormed into a 3–0 lead, with Jack Johnson already reaching for his coat. However, a spirited fightback from Johnson, Lewis Longden and Kev Ryan hauled the match back to 3–3 and forced a decider. With lots drawn, Marples and Johnson contested the final frame, which Marples clinched convincingly. Credit must go to the Lennons trio for a tremendous comeback effort in a thrilling contest.

Just a week away, excitement for many of our players is brewing as the sixth edition of the Romley competition concludes in Sheffield at the Ding Junhui Academy- Good luck to all involved.
