Martin Burrell Back in Winning Form After League Hiatus

6 Reds Returns to Clay Cross For The Second Edition

Back for its second year, the 6 Reds competition once again found its home at YM Brotherhood in Clay Cross. A total of 41 league players took part in this fast-paced twist on the traditional game—many experiencing the format for the very first time.

Following a morning briefing and a quick acclimatisation to the adapted rules, play got underway just after 9am. The action was relentless, and the ball-in-hand rule kept matches moving at a brisk pace. Early exits from some of the league’s big hitters—including defending champion Dan Tramontano—shook up the draw. Despite bowing out, Dan stayed on to support his fellow players, as did many others, which added to the day’s camaraderie.

With matches flying by, I had to stay sharp to keep up. It was fantastic to see players from all divisions making deep runs. Steven Moss of Hasland reached back-to-back quarterfinals, Lennon’s newcomer Kevin Ryan impressed with a semi-final finish, and Lewis Longden once again proved his consistency by going deep into yet another competition.

The final was a fitting showdown between the day’s standout performers—both representing YM Brotherhood. John Roseman, who notched the tournament’s highest break of 50 (well played, John!), faced off against Martin Burrell, whose grit and determination saw him overcome his handicap and also record the second-highest break.

Burrell surged to a 2–0 lead in the final. Roseman responded with resilience, crafting small breaks and capitalising on the ball-in-hand rule to claw back a frame. But Burrell, adapting impressively to a format he’d never played before, sealed the win in the fourth frame to claim the title on his debut. A warm round of applause greeted him from the loyal supporters who stayed to the end, along with gracious congratulations from his opponent.

This win for Martin will also book him a place in next years Champion of Champions showdown-Well done!

👏 A huge thank you, as always, to Dunc and the team at YM Brotherhood for their superb hosting, to Ben Monk for his sponsorship support, and to everyone who helped make the event a success. We’re already looking forward to next year’s edition!

I enjoyed the competition and love a challenge of a new format, as you have to adapt your game to suit it. It was a good day played in good spirit. It was also great to see some of the young players doing well.
