BIRLEY CAPS OFF REMARKABLE SEASON WITH PREMIER MASTERS TITLE

Premier Division Masters champion, David Birley

If there was ever any doubt that David Birley has enjoyed one of the finest individual seasons in recent Chesterfield & District Snooker League history, it was firmly put to bed at Alfreton SC as the Clock Tower cueist rounded things off in style by lifting the Premier Divisional Masters title.

Fresh from claiming the Champion of Champions crown just a week ago, Birley arrived looking to add one final piece of silverware to an already overflowing collection — and, in doing so, overcome the very best players the Premier Division had to offer.

With a few late changes and substitutions to the field, play got underway at 10am, and from the very first balls struck, the standard was clear to see. Excellent table conditions, high-quality potting and a string of closely fought matches ensured the spectators were in for a proper day’s entertainment.

The Welcome Institute’s Tony Morgan set the early benchmark in the breaks department with an excellent 61 during his opening round victory over Adam Cupit, before teammate Dave Bolton raised the bar further with a classy 64 break in his commanding semi-final win over Ben Monk.

On the other side of the draw, Birley was quietly and efficiently going about his business. After navigating a tough route to the latter stages, he produced another polished performance to overcome Tony Morgan 3–0, setting up a fitting final between players representing the top two teams in the Premier Division — Clock Tower and Welcome Institute.

And the final certainly delivered.

Birley wasted little time in making his intentions known, producing a superb 59 break to stamp authority on the early exchanges. But Bolton, who had looked sharp all day, responded in style with a magnificent 81 break, packed with superb recovery pots and confident cueing. As the break gathered momentum, the crowd — and even his opponent — seemed to will him towards what would have been a first-ever C&DSL century break. Sadly, it wasn’t to be this time, but it was still a wonderful contribution and one of the moments of the day.

As champions so often do, Birley responded.

Two composed breaks of 40 helped swing momentum back in his favour, edging him into a 2–1 lead in what had become a final full of quality scoring and positive snooker.

The fourth frame, with the finish line now in sight, became a much tighter affair. Chances were harder earned, the tension quietly building as both players knew the importance of the next opportunity. It was Birley who eventually found the decisive moment, piecing together a steady 31 break to get over the line and secure yet another title.

And with that, the curtain came down on what has been a truly remarkable season for the Clock Tower man.

Congratulations to David Birley on another outstanding achievement and a season that will take some beating.

A huge well done also to Dave Bolton, who stepped in at late notice, played some brilliant snooker throughout the day and contributed massively to an entertaining final.

Finally, thank you as always to Alfreton SC for hosting the event and once again providing fantastic playing conditions for our players.
