Pagett wins his first CDSL singles title

Clock Tower’s Dave Pagett proudly holds the Alfreton SC Handicap trophy.

The Handicap Final may not have delivered the big breaks many expected, but what it lacked in heavy scoring it more than made up for in tension and tactical play. By the end of the night, it was Clock Tower’s Dave Pagett celebrating a fully deserved first singles title in the Chesterfield & District Snooker League, defeating Alfreton’s Ian Rose 4–0 in the 58th staging of the Handicap Competition Final, sponsored by Alfreton SC.

Both players had earned their place in the final the hard way, taking down some major names en route, so confidence would have been high on both sides. Rose was looking to lift the trophy for a second time, while Pagett arrived chasing that breakthrough individual title.

Right from the opening frame, it was clear this was going to be a proper battle. Chances were limited, safety was tight, and every mistake looked costly. Pagett found himself just two behind with pink and black remaining. After calmly knocking in the pink, the black looked awkward, glued tight to the bottom cushion with safety seemingly the only realistic option. Dave, however, had other ideas. After taking a long look at the angle, he fired in a superb long double to the green pocket with perfect weight — part frame-winning pot, part containing safety shot. A huge moment early on and a real statement of intent. 1–0.

For two players of this calibre, the lack of sizeable breaks was unusual, but it reflected the nature of the contest. Neither man was prepared to hand over easy opportunities and both stayed disciplined throughout, forcing the match into a tactical, hard-earned affair.

Frame two followed a similar pattern. Pagett slowly edged his way clear, building a useful lead before the colours. Rose battled hard to stay in touch but couldn’t quite convert the openings when they arrived. Once Dave potted the yellow to leave snookers required, the Clock Tower man had doubled his advantage at 2–0 and was beginning to settle.

The third frame arguably summed the match up perfectly. An early foul from Pagett gifted Rose a long opener which he confidently converted, piecing together a small contribution to edge ahead. The frame then swung back and forth with some excellent safety exchanges from both players. Heading into the colours, Ian still held a narrow lead and looked poised to get himself firmly back into the contest. But just like frame one, Pagett produced when it mattered most, pinching both pink and black to steal another crucial frame. At 3–0 down, the mid-session interval probably arrived at the right time for Rose.

Sometimes a short break can completely change the momentum of a final. This time, though, Pagett refused to loosen his grip. The fourth remained scrappy and tense, but Dave once again stayed composed, gradually carving out a useful advantage heading into the closing colours. Once brown and blue disappeared, Rose recognised the position and sportingly offered his hand.

A 4–0 score line perhaps looked harsher than the match itself, because several frames were extremely tight, but there was no doubt the better player on the night lifted the trophy. Pagett controlled the key moments superbly and showed impressive composure throughout to finally secure that maiden singles success.

Congratulations to Dave Pagett on a thoroughly deserved victory, and commiserations to Ian Rose, who played his full part in a competitive and absorbing final.

Thanks also go to Alfreton SC for their continued sponsorship and hosting of the event, to referee Adam Cupit for officiating the final, and to Vice Chairman Chris Field for scoring and presenting the trophy.

It was also excellent to see a strong crowd in attendance supporting both finalists — exactly the sort of atmosphere a competition final deserves.
