Elliott wins the Division Three Masters
Fresh from securing promotion to Division Three — and remarkably finishing level on points at the top of the player standings — it felt only fitting that YM Brotherhood teammates Michael Elliott and Keith Chaplin would go head-to-head in this season’s Division Three Masters Final.
For Michael, this was an opportunity to lift his first Divisional Masters title, while Keith arrived hoping to make it back-to-back Masters victories after claiming the Division Four crown just twelve months ago.
The route to the final had followed an almost identical script. Both players edged through hard-fought quarter-finals with 3–2 victories, before turning on the style in the semi-finals with commanding 3–0 wins to set up the all-Brotherhood showdown. Given how closely matched they had been all season, there genuinely looked to be very little separating the pair.
In fact, I confidently predicted a tense 3–2 finish and perhaps even a black-ball decider, based on the story of the season so far.
Safe to say… I got that one badly wrong.
Elliott settled into the final quicker of the two, taking advantage of the early chances that came his way to establish a 1–0 lead. Frames two and three followed a similar pattern, with Michael looking composed and clinical throughout. By the third frame, a classy 38 break underlined the quality on show and helped him complete a convincing 3–0 victory.
Given how evenly matched the pair had been all season, the scoreline perhaps felt a little harsh on Keith, but there was no denying Michael’s quality on the day.
Congratulations to Michael Elliott on winning his first Division Three Masters title, and commiserations to Keith Chaplin after another excellent season.
