Frequently Asked Questions
While our league has a comprehensive set of written rules, there are always a few unwritten guidelines and unique situations that can’t easily be captured in our handbook. This section is designed to help clarify anything you might be uncertain about. If you have questions, please use the form below — we’ll be happy to provide answers and guidance.
Q. If I can’t make an arranged competition match, can I rearrange?
A. Yes — but only at your opponent’s discretion and on a date that suits them. They may also choose to reverse the venue. This is a reasonable compromise.
If no alternative date can be agreed, your opponent has the right to claim the win.
In exceptional circumstances, you can submit a written appeal to the General League Secretary for consideration.
Q. When in a free ball situation, does the striker have to nominate the free ball and if they don’t, is it a foul stroke?
A. A nomination is required if it is not completely obvious which ball the striker is playing.
If it isn’t clear, the referee should ask: “Please nominate.”
If the striker fails to make a clear nomination when asked, and the shot appears to target a different ball, the referee may call a foul.
In short:
If the referee doesn’t ask, it’s assumed they know which ball you’re aiming for and therefor a foul stroke should not be called by the referee.
Q. Can a team draw a theoretical A.N.OTHER player at the start of a match in case their 5th player doesn’t arrive?
A. No — you must choose one or the other: either name the 5th player or use A.N.OTHER.
However, if both captains agree, the 5th spot can be left blank at the start.
If the missing player still hasn’t arrived by the end of the 4th frame, A.N.OTHER may then be drawn.
(Note: All four players must be included in the draw.)
Q. What ruling is there for players arriving late to a match?
A. League matches must begin at 7:30 pm. If a team has not arrived within 15 minutes of the official start time, the opposing team may claim one frame for every 15 minutes of absence. This also applies to any players who arrive late after the match has already started, and continuity must be maintained throughout the match.
The same rule applies to competition matches, where a player may claim one frame for every 15 minutes after the agreed start time.
Please note that if teams or players are running late, a courtesy call is expected. The opposing team captain or player may use discretion in situations such as traffic delays or adverse weather conditions. It is also advised that the league secretary be informed.
